Great cookbook as well as stories about cowboy life! The book has some wonderful recipes for outdoor grub. Some are old and some don't use traditional units of measure. They are all great dishes, though. Stella also intersperses stories about camp cooks she has known, how they did things, what was important to them, etc. These stories are a great documentation of the western cowboy life. The section on sourdough is especially good."

Great book... As a man I do not like recipes where I have to order ingredients from internet sources because they are not available in my supermarket. This book is filled with good food made with common ingredients. I have now tried several recipes and everything has been very good and a couple have been lip smacking good. I use probably thirty cookbooks out of my collection but this one I use more than any other. So go out, get a hunk of cow, and cook it like these guys tell you to."

Beautiful, and great recipes This is a gorgeous, coffee table-type cookbook with its beautiful historic photos of cowboys and Texas. But the recipes are also terrific. Spears is a famous chef, but the recipes are very home cook-friendly. And lots of Texas favorites, like an updated version of Frito pie with venison chili. Only one I didn't like that much was a Dr Pepper cake. But the meat recipes are great. So are the campfire cocktails!"
